When a cavity forms, we recommend immediate treatment to avoid complications, such as an infection or in extreme cases, tooth loss. Fortunately, we can treat tooth decay using a natural-looking dental filling. How do we place them? What can you do to protect them while also safeguarding your teeth against cavities?
Composite Fillings vs. Metal Fillings
In the past, dental fillings were primarily made from metal, either amalgam or gold. While gold may still be used for teeth that must endure particularly serious bite forces and pressure, we use composite resin most of the time. Metal-free, the material can be shaded to better match your tooth structure. After we remove the decay and clean the tooth, we can apply the material and cure it using a special light. We then polish the tooth for a more natural looking appearance. The entire procedure only takes a single visit!
Warning Signs of Tooth Decay
When should you see the dentist about tooth decay? In many cases, patients begin to notice they feel sensitivity in their tooth to hot or cold temperatures. As the decay continues to grow more severe, serious toothaches can form. If you notice pain in your tooth that doesn’t subside after 48 hours, then please contact our team today! We can see if you require a filling or a crown to restore your tooth.
Preventing Cavities
After we place your filling, we can recommend tips for avoiding further cavities, such as brushing your teeth twice a day or flossing every night before bed. We also recommend having your teeth thoroughly cleaned every six months in our office. Finally, try to cut back on foods and drinks high in sugar and other starches!
